What Is Redcoats.io?
Redcoats.io is a free, browser-based 3D first-person shooter set in the 18th- and 19th-century musket era. Two factions — the Crimson Army and the Azure Army — fight to capture each other's forts on maps that hold up to 1,000 simultaneous players.
It's slow weapons, sweeping cavalry, thunderous cannon, and the kind of large-scale chaos that no team-shooter has really tried before. The good news: you don't need quick reflexes or a high-spec PC. You need patience and a feel for positioning.
Step 1 — Pick a Class
There are four classes. As a new player, pick the Musketeer. Everything else can wait.
- Musketeer — beginner-friendly. Long musket, fixed bayonet. Read the full class guide.
- Cavalryman — advanced. High skill ceiling, brutal punishment for mistakes.
- Cannoneer — team-focused. You'll feel the impact, but you won't see the kills.
- Sailor — situational. Only useful on coastal maps.
Why Musketeer first? Because it teaches the game. You learn sightlines, reload management, and how massed fire wins more than personal aim. Everything you learn here transfers to the other classes.
Step 2 — Learn the Basics
You need to know about ten keys to survive. We have the full controls reference, but here's the bare-minimum survival pack:
| Key | Action |
|---|---|
| W A S D | Move |
| Shift | Sprint (drains stamina, cancels reload) |
| C | Crouch (improves accuracy) |
| Left Click | Fire |
| Right Click | Aim down sights (essential — never hip-fire a musket) |
| R | Reload |
| V | Bayonet attack / melee |
| 1 2 3 | Switch weapons |
| M | Open large map |
| T | Voice / proximity chat push-to-talk |
Step 3 — Your First Match
Spawn
You will spawn at one of your faction's forward bases. The map (M) shows you objectives — coloured icons indicating fort positions and current control.
The First Two Minutes
- Don't sprint into the front line. You'll get shot before you see what shot you.
- Find a small group — three to five players moving the same direction. Tag along.
- Stay slightly behind them. Let them absorb the first contact while you observe.
- When fighting starts, stop moving, right-click to aim, and shoot anyone with the opposite faction's coat colour.
- After firing, immediately step back behind cover and press R to reload. Do not stand in the open.
The Reload Cycle
The reload takes 4-5 seconds. During that window, you are defenceless. The single most important rhythm in Redcoats.io is:
Shoot. Step back. Reload behind cover. Step forward. Shoot.
Internalize that loop and you'll outlive 90% of new players.
Step 4 — Core Tactics
Stick With Your Team
This is a 1,000-player game. Lone wolves die in three seconds. Always have at least one friendly player within 30 metres of you. If you find yourself alone in a field, you've already made the mistake.
Watch the Minimap
The minimap shows allied positions and last-known enemy contacts. Glance at it every 10 seconds. Flanking deaths are the #1 killer of new Musketeers, and the minimap shows you the flank coming.
Aim High
Headshots one-tap. Body shots usually take a follow-up. At long range, aim slightly above centre mass — bullets drop noticeably past 80 metres.
Hold Cover, Don't Hide Behind It
Cover is for reloading, not for hiding. Pop out, fire, step back. If you stand still behind a wall, someone will eventually flank you.
The Capture Mechanic
Forts capture by presence — multiple friendlies in the capture zone, no enemies inside. The more friendlies in the zone, the faster it captures. Read the full fort capture guide when you're ready.
10 Beginner Mistakes
- Sprinting everywhere. Sprinting makes you visible, wastes stamina, and ruins your aim for two seconds after you stop.
- Hip-firing the musket. Hip-fire accuracy is terrible. Always right-click to aim.
- Reloading in the open. Reload behind cover. Always.
- Ignoring the minimap. You will be flanked. Check the map.
- Engaging cavalry alone in the open. Run for cover or terrain. A solo Musketeer vs a Cavalryman in a field is a free kill for the rider.
- Trying to be a sniper. The musket isn't a sniper rifle. Bullets drop. Move closer.
- Standing on top of a hill / wall edge. You're skylined. Everyone can see you. Step back from the edge.
- Ignoring the pistol. The pistol exists for emergencies. Use it when caught reloading.
- Pushing fort gates alone. Fort gates are kill zones. Wait for a group of 5+ friendlies before pushing through.
- Quitting after one bad match. Your first 5 matches will be rough. Your first 50 will be your education. Stick with it.
The 100-hour rule: Redcoats.io's depth doesn't reveal itself until around hour 30, and the meta won't click until hour 100. Be patient with yourself.
